Frequently Asked Questions

Kids Martial Arts

Q: “Will martial arts, karate, tae kwon do make my kid violent?”

No way! In fact, martial arts makes kids calmer and more respectful than ever. Martial arts always has been about peace, and it always will be.

Q: “Do kids get injured in martial arts, karate, tae kwon do?”

Sometimes. But the truth is, injuries are very, very rare here. We have a lot of measures in place to keep your child perfectly safe. In fact, safety is our #1 concern.

Q: “Can my child still participate in martial arts, karate, tae kwon do if he/she is not athletic?”

Yes! In fact, martial arts is kind of a beacon of light for kids who just don't fit into team sports. Kids who never could throw a ball well or run fast find that martial arts is accessible to them. It's something they excel at, and as a result, their confidence soars.

Q: “Do kids enjoy martial arts, karate, tae kwon do? Do they stick with it for a while?”

Kids have a blast here. There's smiling and laughter throughout every class. We have our moments of intense concentration and focus... but we always balance things out with fun and games to keep everything alive and light.

Q: “Will martial arts, karate, tae kwon do improve my child's confidence?”

Yes! Martial arts is a powerful source of confidence for kids. They practice hard and learn techniques in order to advance through the ranks. And as they advance, they fill with pride. After all, they're the ones doing all the work - so they feel all of the accomplishment whenever they learn a new move... achieve a new belt... or get praise from their fellow students and instructors.

Q: “How old should my child be to start martial arts, karate, tae kwon do?”

Any age! Most kids range from 5 to teenagers, but we have kids who are younger, too. Classes are customized to suit children of different ages. A teenager receives very different treatment than a 6 year old, for example.

Mixed Martial Arts

Q: “Is this MMA training program for 'star athletes'? Or can anyone join?”

Our doors are open to anyone and everyone. As long as you're willing to learn, have an open mind, and have fun - you're more than welcome. If you're not in great shape right now, don't worry about it. We'll get you in tip-top shape in no time.

Q: “Do you have injury-prevention measures in place?”

Absolutely. Every class begins with warm-ups and stretching to get you limber and loose. This in itself prevents most injuries. Next, we teach every technique very precisely. And we teach you how to practice it in a very precise way too. This instruction - combined with professional supervision - insures that you won't get injured. Injuries do happen, but they're very rare.

Q: “Are these classes violent?”

Absolutely NOT! These classes are fun, challenging, motivating, and many other things. But they're certainly not violent. Our MMA training program is a tightly knit family of people who are all dedicated to the cause.

In our case, the cause is having a blast while learning killer MMA technique.

Q: “What ages are most of your members?”

Our MMA training members fall within a very wide age range. In truth, our training is fun & challenging, and gets people in shape of all ages. However, most of our members range from mid 20s to late 40s.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Q: “What level of physical fitness does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu require?”

Any. We have guys and gals who are in incredible shape - and others who aren't. Everyone has a great experience, and gets a killer workout, too.

Q: “Can I still take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes if I have a medical condition / past serious injury?”

Most people with medical conditions and past injuries can take BJJ without a hitch. However, we recommend speaking to your doctor first. He / she will know best. We're also glad to work around your condition / injury in accordance with your doctor's advice. Just let us know what your doctor says!

Q: “Is there a high risk for injury?”

Definitely not! After years of practice and expertise with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, we've identified the key factors that lead to injury - and designed our program to counter each of these factors. The result: injuries do happen (as they do with any intense sport), but they're extremely rare.

Q: “Can women take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?”

Absolutely. And even though it's a close-contact sport, there's never any awkwardness or uncomfortableness between genders. Everyone is just focused on having a great training experience. And because you'll be paired up with people of your skill level and size, gender doesn't even make a difference.

Q: “What's the class-environment like here?”

In a nutshell: supportive, fun & focused. BJJ tends to have a “family-like” vibe. After all, you're constantly challenging yourself, and striving to be your best in every class. This creates a real sense of camaraderie & team - which is part of the awesome BJJ experience.

Q: “Can I still participate if I don't want to be in tournaments or participate in MMA matches?”

Absolutely. For some, BJJ is a fun, kick-ass hobby. For others, it's a way of life. And for others - it's their career. Whatever your goals are, you're more than welcome as long as you're ready to have a great time, do some hard work, and learn the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Adult Martial Arts

Q: “Is there a risk for injury with martial arts?”

Any sport or form of exercise comes with a risk of injury. However, there are a few things that make our program very safe. It's because of these few things that we barely see any injuries with our program.

Stretching: At the beginning of every class we go through a series of stretches. These stretches get your muscles and joints ready and warmed up for exercise.

Supervision: Every class is supervised by trained, licensed professionals. We watch carefully to make sure no student is doing anything in a dangerous or unsafe way.

Q: “What level of fitness is required for martial arts?”

You'll get in shape as you go. You don't have to be in great shape to start.

The great thing about martial arts is you can be at any fitness level and do great. That's because there's no rush or pressure to do anything quickly. You can learn at your own pace.

If you have a knack for it, you can speed through techniques. If it's a bit harder for you, take your time. All we care about is that you're having fun, learning and progressing, and staying safe.

Q: “I've heard martial arts is violent. Is this true?”

Absolutely not! Martial arts is about peace, balance & harmony. It's about becoming in touch with your body and all of life. It's about happiness and fulfillment.

The self-defense techniques you learn help you become flexible and strong. They help you become confident and proud.

The guiding principles of martial arts help you diffuse situations before violence becomes a part of them. However, if a hostile situation does ever come about, you'll have the tools you need to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Muay Thai

Q: “Should I get in shape before starting Muay Thai?”

Not at all. If you're not in shape already, our Muay Thai classes will get you into tip-top shape in no time. It's not only an incredible martial art - it's also one of the funnest, most kick-ass workouts around.

Q: “Will my past injury / medical condition interfere with classes?”

Contact your doctor, and see what he/she says. If your doctor has any questions for us, let us know and we'll gladly answer them!

Q: “Muay Thai seems very intense. Do people get injured a lot?”

Muay Thai IS intense. That's what's so awesome about it ;-). However, people do NOT get injured a lot. We've created a supportive, safe environment here.

Q: “If I'm new to this, am I going to have a 'painful' learning process?”

Not at all. For sparring & drills, you'll be paired up with either people of your skill level - or more advanced students who will help show you the ropes. No one here is a "bully" or anything like that. Everyone is extremely supportive and encouraging of one another.

Q: “I'm NOT a competitive fighter. Are these classes right for me?”

Absolutely. Many people take our Muay Thai classes as a way to get in shape. Others want to learn an awesome martial art. Some just want to get an adrenaline rush. But you don't have to compete to fit in here.
